Preheat the oven to 350 F and prepare an 8x8 pan by greasing it with butter or lining it with parchment paper. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix well after each addition. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until well combined. Add the vanilla extract, milk, grated lemon zest, and lemon juice to the batter. Whisk everything together until you have a smooth and uniform batter. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the surface using a spoon or a spatula. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely before adding the glaze.
